Wallpapering Guide

Wallpapering could be called ‘art’. Regardless of how elementary a handyman task like this seems, there are always tricky situations you can fall into. To make it easy-peasy, you’d have to choose carefully the methods to ‘clothe’ your wall to the quality of the materials you’ll use. Here are a few few tips that will make your enterprise easier:

1. Read The Manual!

With every role of wallpaper comes a instruction sheet, so you’d better read it carefully! Unless, of course, you can put up with disastrous results. If the surface of the wall is imperfect, use primer to fill in the tiny cavities.

2. Buy the respective tools

Make an adequate choice when you buy the equipment required. Except compatible brush and paste, take a few canvas sheets, to cover the floor of the premises you will redecorate. Another important part of your handyman equipment is clothing. Buy gloves, so you don’t glue your hands, while you put Herculean efforts to tackle the paper.

3. Wallpapers choose carefully

First, and most important, choose high-quality ‘skin’ for your project. If you decide to be a little bit stingy, you’ll probably end up with some thin wallpaper that will tear to pieces, when you try to glue it on the wall. If you’d like to save time buy pre-trimmed papers, which will spare you a lot of humongous efforts in cutting and chasing after a rolling ‘scroll’.

4. What color?

This option will depend on the size of the room in question. If it is large enough, use darker colors with bigger prints. It will make the room both homely and smaller. If the chamber is smaller in size use the opposite – lighter colors and smaller prints to create the feeling of a more spacious room.

5. Easy-to-match patterns

Embrace the idea of ‘straight’ patterns on you wall’s ‘clothing’. Their advantage is the so-called neighouring panels will meet in a straight line. If you, however, choose the ‘drop-patterned’ variation, the procedure will become more difficult. This means you’ll have to match design repeats in the very pattern, so it doesn’t look like the panels were cut. Not only is it time-consuming, but you’ll definitely need more wallpaper roles to achieve a perfect match.

6. Fill in the gaps

After you’ve carefully removed the old wallpapers and their left-overs, make sure there aren’t any tiny holes or imperfections that will ruin the look of your new wall ‘covering’. For the purpose fill in the small cracks and similar with a spackling mixture. After it dries, use sandpaper to make the surface smoother and wipe the dust away. The last step of your prolonged prep would be to clean with an all-purpose cleaner and leave it dry.

7. Hang them like a pro

After you’ve completed the to-do list above, you’re free to glue the wallpaper to the wall. Climb on a ladder and start from the top downwards. Be very careful not to fold the paper. Make sure you’re stable, so you don’t land on the ground like a sack of potatoes. When you’ve glued the top let down the sheet very gently. Take a soft towel and use it to press the surface with circular motions to rid of any tiny air bubbles.
