Choose The Right Home Lighting

What’s the best way to light a room? It depends on each room’s purpose. The right home lighting can enhance productivity and even improve health problems. Light not only improves vision, but has unconscious effects on biological functions and emotions.

Lamps dominate home lighting

Lamps are most ubiquitous in private homes and offices because they are portable and are literally part of the décor. It’s much more common to redecorate a home than an office, even a home office, and lamps fit the bill. Lamps are particularly good for smaller rooms, where an overhead can be too much. You want them in bedrooms, living rooms, and dens, where lighting needs change depending on the activity.

Large rooms can accommodate overhead and lamp lights depending on the immediate need. Wall lighting and spots are often used for décor or to enhance a work of art and they help set a tone in any room.

If you’re conscientious about saving energy, there are now energy-saving, three-way CFLs for lamps that work like the old incandescent bulbs, only they last longer and don’t burn as hotly. The best thing about lamp lighting is that there are nearly endless options. Lamps come in hundreds of styles, colors, sizes, and shapes. Some are true works of art from potters and sculptors, while others fit décor themes like minimalism or distressed cottage.

Overhead lighting is safer and supports attention to detail

You don’t put lamps where there’s water, such as bathrooms and kitchens. Overhead lighting is safer and more useful in these rooms, where paying attention and being alert to details like putting on makeup or assembling ingredients to put over a hot stove or inside an oven is essential.

In addition, overhead lights do not have cords that can fray and possibly spark a fire. They can’t be knocked over or easily broken.

Overhead lighting can be adjusted to suit a mood or need. While you may want bright lights while you’re preparing a meal for two, dim the lights when you’re serving in your eat-in kitchen.
