5 Tips to fighting allergies at home

It is not uncommon for your family to suffer from allergies depending on the season. If you live with pets, you could develop allergies from pet dander and fur. There are many reasons why you may experience allergies but there are some ways that you can help to minimize the symptoms and prevent yourself from getting seriously ill. This article will provide some tips on how to fight allergies at home.

Vacuum your home regularly

  1. Vacuum your home regularly. Vacuuming at least once or twice a week can improve the air quality in your home and decrease the allergens in the air. It is important to see to it that your vacuum is equipped with a HEPA filter so that it can eliminate as many allergens as possible. If you live with your pets, children, or other adults, it is also a good idea to invest in carpet cleaning for your home from time to time. This will also cut down a great deal on the amount of allergens in the air and in your carpet.
  2. Keep your bathroom mold free. It is important to clean your bathroom regularly so you can ensure that there is no mold growing in the shower or bathtube. Mold can cause congestion and other illnesses that can negatively effect your family. The more often you can take a few moments to wipe down your shower and rid your shower of mold, the better you will feel.
  3. Clean your sheets. At least once a week, make sure that you clean your sheets in hot water. This will cut down on dust mites and it is always nice to sleep in clean sheets. The dust mites can wreak havoc on one’s allergies so ridding your sheets of them can make all the difference in the world. Another tip to cleaning your sheets is to use detergent that is free of dyes and fragrances as they can cause an allergy breakout as well.
  4. Take your shoes off before entering your home. While it can be an inconvenience, taking your shoes off before entering your home can cut down on the dirt and debris you track inside. If you forget to take your shoes off or it is not your style, be sure to sweep off your front steps and porch. The cleaner your pathway into your home, the less dirt you will track inside.
  5. Avoid allowing pets on your furniture. If you have pet allergies, it is important to keep your pets off of your furniture. This will decrease your contact with pet dander and can make a big difference in how you feel. If this is hard for you to do, consider laying a blanket on the couch so that your pet can lay on it instead of the couch itself.

These simple tips can make a big difference in your quality of life as they will help to cut down on allergy outbreaks. If you follow these tips and are still experiencing some trouble, it may be a good idea to contact your primary care physician who can advise you on how to proceed.

    We also recommend changing the air filter in you HVAC system at least every 3 months, especially during allergy season. This will make a tremendous reduction in airborne allergens, and therefore, vastly improve the quality of the air that you breath!
